Shopping with Rowan is not the fun movie montage that shopping with Rose and Shannon is. Sheâs the type of person who goes into a store with a singular focus, purchases the items she needs, and leaves as quickly as possible. And she doesnât like crowds. Crowds conceal threats. Itâs raining, so the Maine Mall in Portland is extremely crowded. I donât let go of her hand as we stroll through it, partly because Iâm embracing my role as emotional-support human, and partly because holding hands in a mall is the most fantastically ordinary thing weâve ever done.
Bloomingdaleâs is her aesthetic. The more femme part of the womenâs section is not. Sheâs uncomfortable in every dress she tries onâthis is the third. And weâve established that she canât manage heels. Itâs a problem. As much as I adore her high-end futch style, we need to go in the complete opposite direction to make the ruse work. âOkay, babe, we can do flats, but the dress is non-negotiable.â
âYeah.â Sheâs standing tall and stiff in a black asymmetrical Armani. âMaybe something more trench coaty.â
Hmm. That might be it. âA belted sheath midi.â
âI have no idea what that is, Juliet.â She shrugs and screws up her features in confusion. Itâd be cute if we werenât shopping for a funeral outfit.
âItâs⦠more trench coaty!â
âGreat. Iâm taking this thing off. What is with these puffy ass sleeves, for real? Itâs tulle. Itâs tulle and itâs itchy.â She unzips and lets the dress fall to the floor.
âThatâs a six-hundred-dollar garment. Have some respect.â
âFuck it, it doesnât respect me. Itâs hideous and scratchy.â She pinches it off the floor, doing her best interpretation of the bend and snapâwhich Iâm willing to bet she knows nothing aboutâand places it back on its hanger.
âShould I put my clothes on and go on a hunt for a trench coat dress or what?â she asks.
âNo. You donât know what youâre looking for. Stay here, Iâll go.â
âThank you. For going along with this. And for loving me, even though Iâm a FEMA-certified disaster area.â
To think she has to thank me for loving her, as if itâs a burden. âDonât thank me for loving you. Itâs not a chore, Iâm happy to do it. And donât thank me for going along with this, either. Once weâre done here, weâre hitting up a wig shop.â
âRed and curly or nothing.â She gives me an eyebrow wiggle.
Curly auburn isnât in any way inconspicuous, but Iâll let her think itâs an option. âWeâll see.â
